THIS APPLICATION IS USED FOR THE FOLLOWING TYPE OF DEFERMENT:
- Cancer Treatment
DEFERMENT FOR CANCER TREATMENT
Qualified borrowers may receive a deferment on their federal loan(s) while they are receiving cancer treatment. The deferment has no fixed time limit.
Payments are not required, interest does not accrue, and you will not receive a loan billing statement during the period of deferment. However, if you wish to pay on your student loan(s) during the deferment period, you may do so interest free.
Your Federal Perkins Loan must have entered repayment on or before September 28, 2018. Loans which were made before September 28, 2018, but which were not in repayment on that date because the loan was in an in-grace or in-school status are not eligible for the deferment and will not become eligible when it does enter repayment. In addition, a deferment cannot be granted for a period of treatment before September 28, 2018. Your loan must also be paid to the start of the deferment period.
You will receive an additional grace period of six months. Payments are not required and interest will not accrue during the post-deferment grace period.
THERE ARE TWO WAYS TO APPLY:
- Submit an application:
- Print a Cancer Treatment Deferment Request Application
- Complete and sign the application
- Have your physician certify your treatment
- Mail or fax the documentation to:
Student Financial Services

You must apply for a Cancer Treatment deferment for each twelve (12) month period of eligibility.
- Other Options:
If your loan is not eligible for a Cancer Treatment deferment and you are unable to make your scheduled payments, you may apply for an economic hardship deferment or forbearance.
